The universities are responsible for research and education - the Studierendenwerke, such as the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern, are there to support students in Germany in economic, social, cultural and health matters.

The Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern is a public institution and, according to the Bayerisches Hochschulinnovationsgesetz (BayHIG: Bavarian university innovations' regulations), is responsible for

''...the economic and social support and assistance of students studying at state universities, in particular by setting up and running childcare centres, constructing and running student halls of residence and running gastronomic services, the offer of counselling services, as well as providing access to institutions active in cultural and social areas. By carrying out their duties, the Studierendenwerke should contribute to promote international relationships." (https://www.gesetze-bayern.de/Content/Document/BayHIG-G4)

With a staff amounting to more than 500 employees, the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern looks after almost 135,000 students who study at the universities in Munich, Martinsried, Garching, Freising, Rosenheim, Burghausen, Mühldorf a. Inn, Traunstein and Benediktbeuern.
