09.10.16 Königssee
The Königssee is the only lake in Central Europe that resembles a fjord. It is located near Berchtesgaden, in a landscape of beautiful contrasts: just above the lake you see the world-famous Roman Catholic church of St Bartholomä and behind it rises the impressive wall of rock called Watzmann. We will first enjoy the beauty of Königssee on board of an electric boat and then discover the surrounding landscape together. You find lake Obersee close to lake Königssee, at the end of the valley after a short hike of three kilometers. On the lake's shore, there is an alpine chalet called Fischunkelalm, where you can taste Bavarian home-made bread and fresh milk during the summer (the alm is most likely closed in October). A little further, there is also Röthbachfall, the highest waterfall in Germany. In St Bartholomä the pretty pilgrimage church St Bartholomä can be visited and a beergarden with a fantastic view and a small museum about the national park are waiting for us. The Königssee is my personal highlight of Germany and this trips gives you the opportunity to get to know the beautiful Bavarian Alps before the cold season begins. Transportation (Bayern-Ticket) and the boat trip on the Königssee are included in the price.

16.10.16 Fairy-tale castle Neuschwanstein - King Ludwig II
Neuschwanstein, the most famous fairy-tale castle in the world, was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845 - 1886). The romantic monarch and his loved ones lived out their dreams in this fairy-tale labyrinth. Although designed inside and out to look like it was built in the Middle Ages, the castle was equipped with the most modern technology of the era (first telephone in Bavaria, electric lighting, the most up-to-date kitchen utensils and sanitary facilities etc.) After the tour through the castle (english!), enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the Pöllat Gorge from the Marienbrücke (‘Marien Bridge’) and relax with a cup of coffee in the regal castle bistro. Travel is by train (Bayern-Ticket). Transport costs and entrance fees to the castles are included in the price of the trip.

22.10.16 Hike to Herzogstand (1731 m)
Munich proximity to the Alps is one of the reasons why it is considered as a very good place to live. We are going for a last hike before the cold season starts. Herzogstand is one of Munich's Hausberge (translated as house mountain) and is the ideal starting point for your Bavarian Prealps experience. The hike up takes approximately four hours and we ascend almost 1000 meters. We chose the Reitweg for going up, as it is the easiest and safest of the available hikes to the top. At the top you can enjoy a fantastic view over the surrounding lakes and, if the view allows, the distant mountain ranges of the Austrian Alps. After a long break at the top and enjoying the view we will take the same way back and return to Munich by bus and train. As this is a hike and not a simple walk it is important that you have some endurance. The hike is not difficult, but good shoes and weatherproof clothing are required. We are not in a rush to get up, but want it to be a great experience for everyone. There is also an inn at the top and a cable car going down (for the unlikely case that you feel not prepared to return). If there is time, and the weather allows, we can even go a bit further towards Heimgarten. This is significantly more difficult and not a good idea if you are scared of height. Join us for this last hike this year and you might return with the desire to go on further hikes by yourself or with us next year. Exploring the Bavarian Prealps is something you should not miss while being a student in Munich.
