Language tests

Other than in a few exceptional cases, international students are required to pass a language test before beginning their studies in Germany.

DSH (German language test for international university applicants for being admitted to university)

One possibility is to pass the DSH exam (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber), which can be taken in Munich with “Deutschkurse bei der Universität München e.V.”. This document provides examples of DSH exams.

You can enquire about examination dates with the international office of your university or with “Deutschkurse bei der Universität München”.

TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache)

The second possibility is to take the exam “Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache” (TestDaF), which is often also offered in your own country. The addresses of all of the test centres can be found on the TestDaF homepage.

Even if you want to take the TestDaF, it is worth contacting the international office of the university you’d like to study at, since many universities offer courses and even whole semesters aimed specifically at preparing international applicants for their studies in Munich.

Tip:

There are certain differences between the two exams DSH and TestDaF.
