Welcome to Munich!
In order to be able to move into an apartment in Munich in time for the start of the semester, you should ideally start looking for accommodation before you get to Munich. If you’re already in Munich, there are several possibilities to find an apartment.
You’ve found an apartment? Don’t forget to register!
Every resident in Germany is required to register with the authorities if their stay will last longer than three months. As soon as you have found a room or an apartment, you have to register with the Residents’ Registration Office (“Einwohnermeldeamt”) in charge:
In order to register, you will need the following documents:
- your passport/ID
- a rental contract or confirmation from your landlord that you have moved in (“Wohnungsgeberbestätigung”)
- your visa (if necessary, EU citizens do not need a visa)
- your residence permit
Please always remember to inform all the important parties, such as your university or your medical insurance provider, of your change of address. Often, that can be done online.
Do you need any consular assistance?
Here you will find a list of consulates, consulate generals and honorary consulates located in Munich.
If your country is not directly represented, you can find all missions in Germany on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.
