In spring 2023, students are to receive a one-off payment from the Federal Government, amounting to 200 euros.

Students can apply for the one-off payment (“Energiepreispauschale”) amounting to 200 euros from 15 March 2023 onwards. It had already been promised last year in view of the high burden imposed by increased charges for heating, electricity and groceries.

HOW DO YOU APPLY FOR THE MONEY?

Go to the website www.einmalzahlung200.de . A little preparation is needed beforehand: in order to apply for the one-off payment, you will need a “BundID” and also an online ID or the ELSTER certificate. An explanation of how to proceed can be found on the website.

WHO WILL RECEIVE THE ONE-OFF PAYMENT?

All students who, on 1 December 2022, were enrolled at a university in Germany and whose residence is in Germany, are entitled to the payment. This includes PhD students, students in dual studies, part-time students or students who are taking a semester off. Students studying at private universities must note that their course of study must be considered equivalent to one offered at a state university.

International students can also apply to receive the one-off payment if, on 1 December 2022, their residence or habitual residence was in Germany and they were enrolled at a university in Germany at the time.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students don’t have to pay tax on this financial support and it apparently will neither be taken into account when calculating income-related state and social benefits nor for social security contributions. Also, the one-off payment won’t make a difference regarding family benefits and is to be unseizable.
