Cultureclubbing goes DOK.fest München & Unter Deck
As part of cultureclubbing and in cooperation with the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern, DOK.fest München is going to be showing the documentary KOKOMO CITY (director: D. Smith, USA, 2023, 73 min., original English version).
And afterwards, a party in the Unter Deck – and, as always with cultureclubbing, free for students!
“Everyone is so worried about who is fucking who when at the end they all want to fuck each other.” Four Black trans sex workers talk about their lives, in an unadorned and passionate way. They are portrayed by Director D. Smith, who was in the music business with success in her former male identity. Her debut, which tells the story of the four women, is backed by powerful black-and-white pictures and blaxploitation soundtrack. She accompanies them in their world in New York and Atlanta, re-enacts biographical scenes and has long conversations. Sometimes gossip, sometimes real talk: What’s it like to be trans within the Black community? Where’s the difference between a Black and a white customer? The women’s unadorned style again and again produces cutting analyses of society, filled with worldly wisdom.
D. Smith’s former career was as a (male) producer, singer and songwriter in the music industry; among others, she worked together with Lil Wayne and Timbaland and was nominated twice for the Grammy Awards. In 2014, she started her transition into a woman. As a result, she hardly got any jobs as a musician any more and started her three-year work on KOKOMO CITY, her first film. The film premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
