Resident Tutor Programme

Living together does not work without the commitment of individual people, also in student halls of residence. The Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern promotes this commitment by providing financial and moral support to our "resident tutors” or “tutors”. Resident tutors are elected students who organize a wide range of educational, cultural and sports activities in the halls of residence. Supporting and integrating the various different groups of residents – such as international or freshly-arrived students – is an important part of the Resident Tutor Programme.
 

In the halls of residence that have a Resident Tutor Programme, you will normally find the contact details of the tutors close to the general notices put up by the Studierendenwerk (the house rules etc.), in the entrance area or on the bulletin boards. In the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern’s halls of residence there is normally one resident tutor for roughly every 120 residents. The Resident Tutor Programme is financed by subsidies of the Free State of Bavaria as well as by the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern’s own resources.

Do you enjoy organizing cooking evenings, hall of residence parties, meetings for freshly-arrived students, "Schafkopf” tournaments (a classic Bavarian card game), Sunday brunches, going to the theatre, trips, software workshops, weekends on a mountain hut, running groups, barbecues or ...? And you like helping your fellow occupants with questions about the dorm and its common life? - Then being a resident tutor is exactly the right thing for you!

• participating actively in the Heimrat of the hall of residence (the hall’s self-administration committee)
• being there for questions and matters of your fellow occupants
• organizing and carrying out events and activities for the students living in the hall of residence
• participating in the one-day workshop for intercultural communication for resident tutors
• handing in a programme’s concept at the beginning of each semester (winter semester: by 5th November, summer semester: by 5th May)
• reports about the activities that were carried out as a resident tutor at the end of the semester

• a monthly allowance for this honorary post (the German "Übungsleiterpauschale") determined by the extent of the honorary post (not paid in August and September)
• a free-of-charge workshop on intercultural communication
• having the duration of your tenancy extended (in Studierendenwerk's dorms), according to the guidelines
• written confirmation for being a resident tutor, which may come in handy when applying for jobs
• and, of course, a great social life in your student hall of residence, which you actively support and shape!

Resident tutors are elected. The election normally takes place at the halls’ plenums. If you are elected by your fellow residents, the Studierendenwerk (Studierendenwerk) will appoint you resident tutor.
 

If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please turn to the house representatives or resident tutors in your hall of residence. They will be able to tell you when the next election will be taking place and what you have to pay attention to. There might also be an application deadline.

Please note!
Residents who received their room in the hall via the Servicepaket can only be elected as a resident tutor for the amount of time they still have left in their apartment/room (normally a year at most). Also, they can’t have their tenancy extended.

• You are a resident in the hall of residence in which you want to become a resident tutor, and you are not a house representative or Servicepaket tutor at the moment.
• You have at least one year left to stay in your room or apartment (which corresponds to the usual term of this honorary post) and you are not participating in the Servicepaket.
• You are a communicative and open-minded person, you have organisational skills and drive, you are flexible and creative, you enjoy community activities as well as organising them and carrying them out.

Please inform the coordinator of the resident tutor programme about your election, by sending an email to tutoren@stwm.de.

You can find the forms to register as a tutor here. You have to fill them in, sign them and send them to the coordinator.

Normally, the house representatives (Haussprecher/-innen) will write the election records and send it to the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern.
Please ask them if they already handed in the election records and the signed list of the electors of your hall of residence.

Both documents have to be sent to TWO addresses:

After you have communicated your election to the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern, the coordinator will check if the conditions for a tutorship are met. If that is the case, the coordinator will officially appoint you as tutor in your hall of residence.

Then you are ready to start your tutorship: you can start with activities in your hall, or, for example, you can get the keys for the common rooms from the caretaker, etc.

You were a tutor in a hall of residence of the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern, and want to now have your tenancy extended?

Please simply write a short email to the coordinator of the resident tutor programme (tutoren@stwm.de) that you want to have your term as a tutor confirmed. If you want to have the confirmation sent by email, please add a short permission to send it to you via email. That is necessary due to data protection regulations.
With that confirmation, you can then use the form for extending your residency in order to apply with the administrative office of your hall.

Please note:
If you want to receive a confirmation about your tutorship, your term has to be completed - or at least nearly completed, as an exception.
